For the Unit 2 Assignment you will observe a retail establishment of your choice and conduct a concept scavenger hunt. The one requirement is that the establishment sells products marketed to both men and women. You will visit this establishment and take photos that represent the core concepts of this unit. You may use a .com establishment if necessary. You will craft a PowerPoint® presentation that demonstrates each of the concepts with written interpretations and explanations that define the key terms and explains how the image is representative of the concept.
Slide 1: Introduction: the first slide should include the title of the assignment, your name, the name of the establishment observed, and the date and time of the observation.
Slide 2: Provide a referenced definition of gender polarization. Include any further discussion you feel is necessary to explain the concept beyond the definition. (1 paragraph minimum)
Slide 3: Provide an image of a product from the chosen establishment that you feel represents masculinity and write an explanation of how you interpret the product as displaying masculinity. (1 paragraph minimum)
Slide 4: Provide an image of a product that you feel represents femininity and write an explanation of how you interpret the product as displaying femininity. (1 paragraph minimum)
The second section (2 slides) should depict and discuss a structural-functionalist analysis of the establishment in terms of gender.

Slide 6: Provide an image (or two) that demonstrates how the establishment’s arrangement or marketing of gender-specific items could be interpreted using the structural-functionalist paradigm. Include a written explanation of how your interpretation of image(s) applies structural-functionalism. (1 paragraph minimum)
The third section (3 slides) should depict and discuss gender inequity (e.g., androcentrism, heteronormativity, etc.) as evidenced in the establishment.

The fourth section (2 slides) should depict and discuss how culture has influenced the social construction and representation of gender either through cultural change (history) or globalization.
Slide 9: Provide a referenced definition/explanation of the social construction of gender. Include any further discussion you feel is necessary to explain the concept beyond the definition. (1 paragraph minimum)
Slide 10: Provide an image from the chosen establishment that demonstrates the influence of cultural change or globalization on how gender is displayed differently now compared to how it has been displayed historically. Include a written explanation of how the image displays the change in the social construction of gender and identify what influenced the change (e.g., cultural change, globalization, etc.) and how the change is represented (new ideas of femininity or masculinity, gender neutrality, gender inclusivity, gender pluralism, etc.) Be sure to provide referenced definitions for the key terms used in your analysis.
